DATA CENTERS ARE TAKING OVER
By: Derek Varsalona
I do not see much of a use for Data Centers. They are ugly to look at. With the amount of space it takes on the land you could have built housing for the homeless, you could have created a new mall and given job opportunities to the youth, you could have invested in schools. The Data Centers say that property taxes will go down. That has yet to be seen. But it is an eye sore in the community.
Now, President Biden is claiming that Microsoft is going to build a new data center in Wisconsin. I do not want the corporate fat cats in Prince William County to get any idea about buying more land for another useless data center that only serves a corporate and government entity. What concerns me is the amount of information they are storing. It also concerns me what these data centers could be storing in the near term. Also, with the war in Gaza and Israel going on what happens if the terrorist attack one of our data centers either physically or launches a cyber attack on the data center?
The fact of the matter is that these data centers are an eyesore in the community. We could have used that money to better fund special education and education services in the communities. We could have used that money to build a new minor league baseball stadium in Prince William County for the Washington Nationals and create jobs for our youth.
Now, President Biden wants to invest $3.3 billion in monies for data centers in Racine, Wisconsin for Artificial Intelligence. It is bad enough that AI is taking over jobs that manual labor can do. With my hometown of Gainesville, Virginia being the Data Center Capital of not just the United States but also the Data Center Capital of the World, I would not be surprised if this federal money comes to Prince William County. The last thing we need in Prince William County and especially Gainesville, Virginia is another data center. As always comments are welcomed.
