MAYOR ADAMS IS NO HOMELESS ANGEL
By: Derek Varsalona
Mayor Eric Adams has a come to Jesus moment in trying to prevent homelessness. Eric Adams is now sweeping up the homeless and putting people in institutional settings. Why because homelessness is unsightly for the city of NYC. I am not saying that Mayor Adams is ignoring the problem. He is tackling the problem. But the homeless should have the right to sleep where they want and live the lives that they want. It is not the government's job to force these people into shelters. Yes, give them the information, but if they're going to stay on the streets let them.
Mayor Adams is throwing money at the problem to $650million. Yes, it is an investment in the most vulnerable population. But these people can not be forced to be sheltered. I volunteered with the Homeless Population in Nassau County at the Department of Social Services. I enjoyed it. But what I heard in brief conversations with these people is that the shelters are unsafe and the people often get things stolen. The parents frequently told me if it was just me I would go to a homeless shelter, but I am not taking my kids there. Sometimes or at most times the homeless feel that they are being forced into a homeless shelter.
I applaud Mayor Adams for trying to support the homeless. But forcing the people to get help and into housing will only put those people back on the streets and in a worse mental state.
This facility is said to be home-like with beds and 24-hour support. But these people are being forced into a homeless shelter it is not voluntary. This is like being a tiger or lion locked up in a cage. Don't be surprised if the human tigers or human lions lash out and kill because they were forced into prison against their will. As always comments accepted.
