MAYOR MANDANI GETS IT ON RENT
By: Derek Varsalona
Welcome to a new era, New Yorkers. You're now living under the socialist Mayor Zorhan Mandani. I think Mandani gets it on rent. As of right now, New York City has an affordability crisis, much like many major Metropolitan areas such as San Francisco and Washington, DC, just to name a few. The cost of living is skyrocketing to an unaffordable and uncontrolled situation.
In NYC, half of someone's income goes to renting their apartment. Now wonder Mandani won the election in a landslide. He gets the affordability crisis in New York City. But what Mandani is going to figure out is that governing NYC and campaigning for NYC Mayor are two entirely different things.
To date, 100,000 people are living in homeless shelters in NYC alone. As a person who worked with homeless clients at Nassau County Department of Social Services as a volunteer, I find that stat not only appealing but also sad. But a lot of homeless clients said they would rather sleep on the streets than in the Nassau County Homeless shelters, since the streets were safer than the homeless shelter.
As of right now, the median rent in NYC alone is $5,400 a month. That equals out to $64,800 a year just on rent alone. The Median income in NYC is $74,800. Most of the money you make in New York City is going to rent.
I support free market capitalism as a Libertarian. The fact of the matter is, rent is too Damn High. Now, I see why a Socialist won the Mayoral race in New York City. But what Mayor Mandani is going to find out fast, even on his first day on the job, is that campaigning for Mayor of New York City and governing New York City are two entirely different situations. As always, comments are accepted.
