CAMPERS REACH FOR THE STARS WITH THE HOFSTRA REACH PROGRAM
By: Derek Varsalona
Most people with disabilities have heard of CAMP Anchor in the Town of Hempstead. Camp Anchor is a camp for children with special needs. Now, Hofstra University is competing with Camp Anchor, by providing campers with special needs a choice at Hofstra University.
The REACH Program is a fully inclusive camp for students with special needs. For campers that are in grades 2-5 during the fall school year the morning session will be a program of their choosing, while the afternoons are spent on a program of their choosing.
The groups are geared to small sizes. The maximum number of campers in the group is 10 while the mimic number of campers in a group is 8. This provides a safe and active learning environment for campers with special needs. The campers may also obtain 1:1 support per camper. The campers are supervised by high school-aged volunteers who will assist the campers in managing their way around the beautiful Hofstra Campus, which is actually a national register arboretum. Parents can find out more information at Reach@Hofstra.edu and by calling the camp office at 516-463-2267. The cost for each camper is $2,250. Season 1: July 1-12, Session 2: July 15-26, Session 3: July 29-August 9 Session 4: August 12-August 16. As always comments accepted.
